Florida Sinks Ship to Create Coral Reefs

A ship has been deliberately sunk off the coast of Florida, USA, to create artificial coral reefs. Officials from the Coastal Resources Team of Okaloosa County worked with "Destin Fort Walton Beach Tourism" to deploy the ship "Cyclops" four miles southeast of Destin at a depth of 72 feet (over 21 meters). The ship will settle upside down, providing a structure for marine life to create a living environment.

Officials stated, "Marine life seeks out structures to live and thrive, providing them with a robust ecosystem in the Gulf of Mexico." This ship is one of dozens of structures that the county has deployed over the decades, including concrete piles, specially designed units, and other shipwrecks, to help develop the coral reefs in the area.
