The Spanish Football Federation announced today, Tuesday, the appointment of Montse Tomé to succeed Jorge Vilda as the coach of the women's national team, making her the first woman to hold this position. The Spanish Federation stated in a release that Tomé has served as an assistant to coach Vilda since 2018 and "has proven herself and played a significant role in the development of the national team." Earlier today, the new board of the Spanish Football Federation terminated Vilda's contract. The new board was formed after FIFA suspended the president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, due to the kiss scandal. Rubiales sparked a storm of controversy both in Spain and abroad after kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips following Spain's victory over England in the final of the Women's World Cup in Sydney two weeks ago.
