Clashes Between Tunisians and African Migrants in Sfax

Tunisian authorities opened an investigation on Monday following clashes between undocumented migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and residents in Sfax, a city that serves as a major departure point for illegal migration from Tunisia to Europe. Conflicts erupted, involving stone-throwing, between migrants and residents from one of the neighborhoods in Sfax, as reported by the city court spokesperson, Fawzi El Masmoudi.

El Masmoudi explained that the clashes caused damage to vehicles and homes without resulting in any injuries. He added that an investigation has been initiated to identify the individuals responsible and the reasons behind the violence. Local media reported that the police intervened using tear gas to end the confrontations.

The coastal city of Sfax, located in central-eastern Tunisia, is a starting point for many undocumented migrants heading to Europe, particularly to Italy. Its residents regularly protest against the presence of undocumented migrants in their city, demanding their removal.
