UN Refugee Agency: 200,000 People Have Fled Sudan

Olga Sarado, spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, confirmed on Friday that nearly 200,000 people have fled Sudan to neighboring countries since violence erupted last month. She noted that tens of thousands have arrived in Chad in recent days. Sarado called for "urgent financial support to prevent a humanitarian disaster," indicating that "support from the private sector has been slow compared to other emergencies, despite the urgency and severity of the crisis," and added that a new appeal is expected to be launched after the agency called for $445 million last week.

Additionally, James Elder, spokesperson for UNICEF, stated that a factory in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, which produced food for children suffering from malnutrition, has been consumed by flames. He added, "This is the most grim and clear indication yet of how this conflict threatens children's lives in multiple ways."
