UN Reports 62 Humanitarian Workers Killed in a Year

The United Nations announced today, Friday, that 62 humanitarian workers have lost their lives worldwide since the beginning of 2023. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs stated in a report that "62 humanitarian workers have died in crises around the world this year," adding that "84 others were injured, and 34 were kidnapped."

It noted that "the Republic of South Sudan has consistently recorded the highest levels of insecurity, with the country witnessing 40 attacks on relief workers and 22 fatalities as of August 10." According to the report, "Sudan ranks second with 17 attacks on humanitarian workers, resulting in 19 deaths as of August 18." It also indicated that "116 humanitarian workers were killed in 2022," warning of casualties and injuries among relief workers in the Central African Republic, Mali, Somalia, and Ukraine, where 444 workers were attacked last year.

The report highlighted that "in 2021, 460 humanitarian workers were attacked, leading to the deaths of 141 of them."
