A website tracking the number of athletes killed in the war reported that Ukrainian kickboxing champion Maksym Bordus was killed in battles with Russian forces. According to the Ukrainian site "Sport Angels," which was launched with the help of a sports committee comprising NGOs and federations for non-Olympic sports, Bordus was killed on June 11 during "fierce battles against the Russian invaders." The site wrote under a photo of Bordus displaying several medals he had won, "Every day he brought Ukraine closer to victory with a weapon in his hand, but he will not celebrate this victory himself." Citizens urged President Volodymyr Zelensky in a petition on his website to posthumously award Bordus the title of "Hero of Ukraine." Bordus, born in 2000, joined the Ukrainian army to fight from the first day of the Russian invasion in February last year. The petition stated that Bordus was killed by a Russian shell while on a combat mission in the southern Zaporizhia region. The Ukrainian Ministry of Sports could not be immediately reached for comment. The Minister of Sports stated that 262 Ukrainian athletes have been killed in the war against Ukraine.
