The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), stated that an Israeli soldier captive was killed early on Friday morning in a clash between its fighters and an Israeli special force attempting to carry out a rescue operation. The brigades mentioned in a statement, "A Zionist special force was discovered while attempting to advance to free one of the enemy's prisoners, resulting in the death and injury of members of the force." The statement did not specify the number of casualties. Al-Qassam's statement identified the slain soldier as Saar Baruch (25 years old) and also provided his identification number. The Israeli military has not yet responded to a request for comment on the incident. Israel previously stated that it had freed a female soldier who was among those held in the Gaza Strip in late October, suggesting that it might carry out similar operations to recover any remaining captives if possible.
