Russian astronaut Oleg Kononenko captured stunning nighttime satellite images of Cairo from the International Space Station. The Russian news agency TASS reported that "the astronaut, who had previously photographed Mecca at night from space, also took satellite images of Cairo." He added, "I was able to photograph Cairo at night, and the verses of the famous Russian poet Nikolai Gumilyov came to my mind, who sang of Cairo, saying: 'In front of me lies the colorful coral, and a city with light above it, and above the Sultan Hassan Mosque, a minaret piercing the moon.'"
