Power was cut to approximately 166,000 households in the Okinawa and Kagoshima regions of Japan on Thursday morning, as heavy rain and strong winds continued from the slowly moving Typhoon Khanun. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the storm in the East China Sea is moving northwest at a slow speed of about 222 kilometers per hour. Japan's public broadcaster NHK reported that the typhoon is expected to change direction and move east toward the mainland until next Tuesday, but its path has not been determined. The public broadcaster also noted the death of two individuals in Okinawa, a popular tourist destination located southwest of Tokyo, as of Thursday morning. The fire and disaster management agency reported that 41 people were injured in Okinawa and Kagoshima. Okinawa Electric Power Company indicated on its website that "160,040 households, or about a quarter of the homes served by the company, are experiencing power outages." Additionally, Typhoon Khanun forced schools and businesses to close in northern Taiwan on Thursday, with about 40 percent of international flights canceled.
