A police official in India reported that at least 13 people were killed in gunfire clashes between two unidentified armed groups in the troubled state of Manipur in northeastern India on Monday, following seven months of ethnic clashes in the border state that resulted in at least 180 deaths. The police official announced that reports of "major" gunfire clashes had emerged, and the bodies of the deceased, bearing multiple gunshot wounds, were found in a village in the Tengnoupal district of Manipur. The state has witnessed sporadic violence since the peak of ethnic clashes that erupted on May 3 between the majority Meitei ethnic group and the minority Kuki. A senior officer told Reuters by phone from Imphal, the state capital: "We are not in a position to immediately identify the bodies, nor can we determine which armed group they belong to."
