Marrakech Confirms Its Position for IMF and World Bank Meetings Despite Earthquake

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, alongside the Moroccan government, announced in a joint statement that the annual meetings will proceed in Marrakech from October 9 to 15. The statement indicated that since the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco on September 8, staff from the World Bank and IMF have been working closely with Moroccan authorities and a team of experts to conduct a comprehensive assessment of Marrakech's ability to host the 2023 annual meetings.

It was noted that key considerations included ensuring the meetings would not disrupt relief and reconstruction efforts, and that the safety of participants could be guaranteed. The parties confirmed that "based on a careful review of the results, the management of the World Bank and IMF, along with Moroccan authorities, agreed to move forward with the 2023 annual meetings in Marrakech while adapting the content to the circumstances."

Participants emphasized that during this difficult time, the annual meetings provide an opportunity for the international community to stand in solidarity with Morocco and its people.
