British media reported today, Sunday, that former world number one Andy Murray has withdrawn from the French Open tennis championship. The 36-year-old player, who has participated in the French Open only once since reaching the semifinals in 2017, stated last month that he wanted another chance to compete, as he is fit, in the second Grand Slam of the year, which takes place on clay courts.
Murray, a holder of three Grand Slam titles, won the X-on Provence Challenge earlier this month; however, he exited early in Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, and Bordeaux. The Scottish player had decided not to participate in clay court tournaments in previous seasons to focus on grass court competitions in preparation for Wimbledon.
The French Open is set to take place from May 28 to June 11 in the absence of defending champion Rafael Nadal, who has won the title 14 times, due to injury.
