Israel has proposed the establishment of sprawling tent cities in Gaza, funded by the United States and regional partners, ahead of an imminent invasion of the city of Rafah in the southern part of the territory, where nearly 1.5 million displaced Palestinians have settled. The Wall Street Journal reported that Israel presented the proposal to Egypt after Cairo rejected Israeli efforts to carry out a military operation in Rafah and warned of its "severe consequences." According to the newspaper, Egyptian officials stated that the proposal includes the creation of 15 tent sites, each accommodating about 25,000 tents, in the southwestern part of the Gaza Strip. The officials clarified that Egypt would be responsible for setting up the camps, along with temporary field hospitals and water and sanitation facilities. Egypt has not commented on the Israeli proposal, and the office of the Israeli Prime Minister declined to comment on the plan.
