Title: EU Member States Reach Agreement on Migration and Asylum

The Spanish presidency of the European Union announced today, Wednesday, that "Member States have reached an agreement on migration and asylum." The Spanish presidency stated: "EU ambassadors have reached an agreement on the regulatory framework addressing crisis situations and force majeure in migration and asylum." European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted, "This is a true game changer that allows us to push negotiations forward."

I welcome the successful political agreement reached by the Member States on the Crisis Proposal. This a real game changer that allows us to advance negotiations with @Europarl_EN and @EUCouncil. United we can deliver on the Pact before the end of this mandate. #MigrationEU— Ursula von der Leyen (@vonderleyen) October 4, 2023

Today’s meeting was the last opportunity to reach an agreement before the leaders of the 27 EU countries meet on Thursday and Friday in Granada, Spain, where they are set to discuss irregular migration amid rising numbers of arrivals across the Mediterranean, including the Italian island of Lampedusa.
