The Iranian national team advanced to the semifinals of the AFC Asian Cup 2023 after defeating Japan 2-1 in the quarterfinals. Heidemaasa Morita opened the scoring for Japan in the 28th minute of the match. Mohammad Mohbi equalized for Iran in the 55th minute, before Alireza Jahanbakhsh scored in the 90+6 minute via a penalty. Iran is now awaiting the winner of the match between Qatar and Uzbekistan in the semifinals of the AFC Asian Cup 2023.
