Paris Saint-Germain, the champions of French Ligue 1, announced today, Friday, the departure of Spanish defender Sergio Ramos from the club. Ramos (37 years old) joined the French club on a free transfer ahead of the 2021-2022 season after failing to reach an agreement to extend his 16-year stint with Real Madrid.
Ramos, who won the World Cup once and the European Championship twice with Spain, leaves the French club following the expiration of his contract. During his two seasons at Paris Saint-Germain, Ramos secured two league titles and one French Super Cup.
Nasser Al-Khelaifi, president of Paris Saint-Germain, thanked Ramos for his contributions to the club. He stated in a statement, "This combination of Sergio's leadership spirit, team spirit, professionalism, along with his experience at the highest levels, has made him a true football legend, and we were honored to have him in Paris."
"Tomorrow will be a special day, tomorrow I will say goodbye to another stage of my life, goodbye to @PSG_espanol. I don't know in how many places one can feel at home, but without a doubt, PSG, its fans, and Paris have been one of those for me." - Sergio Ramos, June 2, 2023.
