The party of former Prime Minister Imran Khan announced on Monday that authorities are preparing to transfer Khan to a prison with better facilities near the capital, Islamabad, following a court order. His legal team and party have petitioned several courts to issue orders to move Khan to Adiala Jail in the city of Rawalpindi, which they claimed is more suitable for a former prime minister. Close aide Zulfiqar Bukhari stated in a message to journalists that "arrangements are underway," referring to preparations for Khan's transfer after Naim Bangota, Khan's lawyer, stated that a high court in the capital ordered the move. Bangota later posted on the platform "X" that Khan had been transferred to the new prison, but he deleted this post afterward.
Khan has been detained in a modest colonial-era prison in the Attock region of northwest Pakistan, lacking basic facilities such as a toilet attached to the cell or a television, making it difficult for his family and friends to visit him or send him newspapers, books, and food. The former prime minister has been in this prison since early August following his conviction on corruption charges. A court suspended a three-year prison sentence, but he has not been granted bail after authorities charged him in another case related to leaking state secrets. Khan claims that the charges are aimed at preventing him from participating in the upcoming elections scheduled for early next year, which the authorities deny.
