Germany Does Not Plan to Evacuate Its Citizens or Soldiers from Niger at This Time

Two spokespeople from the German Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs confirmed today, Monday, that the government does not intend to evacuate its citizens or soldiers from Niger, based on the current assessment of the situation there. A spokesperson from the Foreign Ministry stated, "Our assessment of the situation is that there is no need for evacuation at this time," adding that the German government is on standby in case of an escalation in the West African country. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius noted that his country is evaluating options regarding its forces currently in Niger and its military withdrawal from neighboring Mali. Pistorius stated during a visit to a cybersecurity facility of the German army, "We are having discussions and preparing for various scenarios with diverse options." He added that the leaders responsible for the coup in Niger have pledged to adhere to international agreements, though this has not yet been confirmed.
