Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain announced today, Saturday, the transfer of French forward Ousmane Dembélé to the French champions on a five-year contract, coming from the Spanish La Liga champions. Barcelona stated that they "reached an agreement for Dembélé's transfer to Paris Saint-Germain for €50.4 million ($55.16 million)."
Dembélé, 26, had renewed his contract with the Spanish giant last year until June 2024 after the expiration of his previous contract. He won the Spanish league three times and the Copa del Rey twice in six years. Dembélé stated on the club's website, "I am happy to join Paris Saint-Germain and look forward to playing for my new team. I hope to continue developing here."
Dembélé began his career at Stade Rennais in France, making his first game appearance for the club in the 2015-2016 season before joining Borussia Dortmund in Germany. He transferred to Barcelona for €105 million plus add-ons, signing a five-year contract in 2017. Dembélé scored 40 goals and provided 43 assists in 185 matches. He earned 37 international caps and was part of the France squad that won the 2018 World Cup and reached the finals in Qatar 2022 last December.
During the current transfer window, PSG, led by Spanish coach Luis Enrique, who took over last month following the dismissal of Christophe Galtier, has signed Marco Asensio, Milan Škriniar, Lee Kang-in, Lucas Hernández, and Manuel Ugarte. Paris Saint-Germain is aiming this season to enhance its record by winning the league for the 12th time and competing for the Champions League title which has eluded them.
Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said, "We are pleased to welcome Ousmane Dembélé to Paris Saint-Germain, where he will be an important and committed player for our club. We take pride in signing another French player who won the World Cup at Paris Saint-Germain as we enter a wonderful new era for our club."
