Jordan: General Amnesty for 7,355 Prisoners

The Jordanian government approved today, Sunday, the draft law for general amnesty for the year 2024, to be referred to the Parliament for approval, granting it urgency. King Abdullah II of Jordan tasked the government with preparing a draft law for general amnesty and proceeding with its constitutional procedures, "taking into account the public interest, preserving personal and civil rights in accordance with the principles of justice and the rule of law, and not conflicting with national security and public peace requirements. This initiative allows those who have committed certain crimes to have the opportunity to reform themselves and start a new life based on integrity, reintegrating them into society and bringing joy to their families."

Jordanian Justice Minister Ahmad Al-Ziyadat stated during a joint press conference with the government spokesperson Minister of Government Communication Muhannad Al-Mubaidin regarding the draft law of general amnesty for 2024, that the amnesty law will include the release of 7,355 inmates in correctional centers, of whom 4,688 are for various misdemeanors and 2,667 related to drug offenses, noting that the project will consider national security and public peace requirements.

He explained that the draft law will cover cases prior to March 19 of this year; that is, cases that occurred before the day of the royal decree for amnesty, expecting it to be approved before Eid al-Fitr.
