Ukraine Signs Security Agreements with Italy and Canada

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Saturday that he signed a security agreement with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Meloni is currently in Kyiv to reaffirm ongoing support, coinciding with the second anniversary of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

"Our meetings with the head of the Italian government, Giorgia Meloni, are always substantive. An important result of today’s meeting was the signing of a bilateral security agreement. This document lays a strong foundation for a lasting security partnership between Ukraine and Italy," Zelensky stated.

Zelensky also signed a security agreement with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Kyiv. The document stipulates that Canada will allocate over 3 billion Canadian dollars in the form of comprehensive financial and defense assistance to Ukraine in 2024. With this, Canada joins Italy, the UK, Germany, France, and Denmark in signing a ten-year security agreement with Kyiv. The agreement aims to enhance Ukraine's security until it can achieve its goal of NATO membership.

"Today Ukraine is definitely stronger than it was two years ago. We have signed yet another security agreement, which strengthens the positions of our people, especially our soldiers. This is a powerful and timely decision, which is an important contribution to enhancing our resilience," Zelensky added.
