A landslide in Yunnan Province, Southwest China, today resulted in the deaths of 47 people who were buried under rubble, as reported by official media. The landslide occurred at 5:51 AM (21:51 UTC on Sunday) in Jincheng County, according to the state-run "CCTV" channel. The channel added that the disaster buried 18 families, while over 200 people were urgently evacuated from the area.
Authorities responded quickly, dispatching more than 200 rescue workers to the affected region along with dozens of fire trucks and other equipment, according to "CCTV." Social media footage showed rescue workers in orange vests searching through the debris of a collapsed building amid towering snow-covered mountains. The official news agency "Xinhua" reported that efforts are ongoing to assess the situation.
Landslides are common in the remote Yunnan region of China, which borders steep mountain ranges, including the Himalayas. China has experienced a series of natural disasters in recent months, some following extreme weather events. More than 20 people died when heavy rainfall triggered a landslide near the northern city of Xi'an in August. In June, a landslide in Sichuan Province in southwest China resulted in the deaths of 19 people.
