Sentencing of Former Proud Boys Leaders to 17 and 15 Years for Capitol Attack

A federal judge, Timothy Kelly, sentenced former leaders of the far-right group Proud Boys, Joseph Biggs and Zachary Rehl, to 17 years and 15 years in prison, respectively, after a jury convicted them of conspiracy to storm the Capitol in a failed attempt to overturn former President Donald Trump's 2020 election defeat. Biggs and Rehl are the first members of the Proud Boys to be sentenced following their convictions for conspiracy and incitement related to the attack on January 6, 2021. The sentenced terms were seen as lenient according to U.S. sentencing guidelines and much lower than the 33 and 30 years requested by federal prosecutors. Judge Kelly stated that he "does not wish to downplay the violent acts," but noted that the incident did not result in a high number of casualties.
