The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a contract for a road lighting project across 40 areas and streets, valued at 278 million dirhams, as part of the Road Lighting Plan for 2023-2026. This initiative aims to develop an integrated infrastructure for the road network to keep pace with the ongoing growth in Dubai and accommodate urban development and population growth.
The Director General and Chairman of the RTA's Board of Executive Directors, Mattar Al Tayer, stated: "The Road Lighting Plan 2023-2026 aims to enhance traffic safety and security for road users, including vehicles and pedestrians, and to ensure the happiness of residents and visitors in those areas. The choice of locations considered safety and traffic requirements as well as the volume of traffic and the level of urban development."
He added: "All new lighting will be installed using energy-efficient LED technology, which offers several advantages over traditional lighting units, including a 55% reduction in energy consumption and a 173% increase in lifespan. This will help reduce the frequency of bulb replacements and lower maintenance and operating costs."
According to the Road Lighting Plan, the RTA commenced in 2023 designing and implementing road lighting in the first to fifth Al Fusiya industrial areas, Al Lisaili, and Al Habbab (first and second sections), with the project currently in the final stages.
In the year 2024, road lighting will be implemented in unlit areas of Mirdif, Al Baraha, Oud Metha, Al Wahda, Al Hudaiba, Al Satwa, Abu Hail, and Al Bada. Additionally, lighting will be installed in the first to third Um Suqeim areas, the first and second Al Safa areas, Al Manara, Al Maraiyal Protected Area Street, the road leading to Al Maktoum Air Force Base, and streets and parking in Jumeirah areas.
In the year 2025, road lighting will be extended to areas including Umm Al Sheif, Al Safouh (first section), Al Quoz (residential first and third sections), Nad Al Hamar, and Al Awir (second section). In 2026, road lighting will be installed in locations such as Al Mamzar, Oud Muteena, and various streets and parking areas in Al Qusais (first and second sections), Nad Al Sheba (first section), Al Warsan (second section), and areas including Hind City, Al Khalij Al Tijari, Umm Ramool, and Ras Al Khor Industrial (first, second, and third sections).
