Hunter Biden, the son of U.S. President Joe Biden, has defied an order issued by Republicans in the House of Representatives to testify behind closed doors regarding his business dealings, escalating tensions with lawmakers who plan to vote today to formalize their inquiry into holding the president accountable. In a press conference outside the Capitol, Biden described the investigation as baseless, stating that he would not cooperate with the subpoena issued by the House Oversight Committee for private testimony. Republicans on the committee have indicated that they expect him to be charged with contempt of Congress if he does not comply. Committee Chairman James Comer stated, "The president's son does not get to set the rules." Later today, the Republican-controlled House is set to vote on a resolution that will allow the inquiry to proceed before the chamber takes a three-week recess starting tomorrow. House Republicans allege that Biden and his family improperly benefited from decisions made by Biden Sr. while he served as vice president from 2009 to 2017. Their investigation is closely focused on the business transactions of Hunter Biden. However, their efforts have so far failed to uncover evidence of wrongdoing by the president.
