UAE Astronomy: Rising of "Al-Sharatan" Marks the Beginning of Summer

UAE Astronomy: Rising of

The Emirates Astronomy Society announced the rising of "Al-Sharatan" early this Sunday from the eastern direction of the country, signaling the start of the summer season. "Al-Sharatan" is the first of the shamali moons and the beginning of the lunar mansion calculations. It is one of the most well-known seasonal markers among Arabs and indicates the arrival of summer and the dominance of hot weather across the Arabian Peninsula during the day, commonly referred to by farmers as "Thuraya Al-Qaydh."

Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, the Chairman of the Society’s Board and a member of the Arab Union for Space and Astronomy, stated: "The rising of Al-Sharatan coincides with a rise in temperatures and a shift to dry conditions, with a decrease in humidity and the activity of Al-Bawarih winds, which are the northwestern winds laden with dust and dirt, extending until mid-July."

It is noted that fishing increases during this period and is considered by fishermen to be one of the best fishing seasons in the Arabian Gulf. Additionally, it marks the first season for the ripening of early dates, figs, and mangoes, alongside the drying of most wild pasture grasses.
