Georgian Parliament Overturns Presidential Veto

The Georgian Parliament has succeeded in overturning the veto exercised by President Salome Zourabichvili and has approved the "Foreign Agents" law. Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili stated, "84 deputies supported the law, and 4 opposed it." To override the veto, a simple majority of votes was required.

The President of Georgia must now sign the law; however, if she refuses, the law will be signed by the Parliament Speaker. There were two votes held in Parliament: the first was against the President's objections, and the second was in favor of the original version of the "Foreign Agents" law.

In the first response to the law's approval, a joint statement was issued by the EU's chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, and the European Commission, stating that "the European Union and its member states are considering all options to respond to such developments." It is worth noting that this move occurred amidst opposition and criticism from the West regarding this law.
