The Palestinian representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Riyad Mansour, confirmed the Palestinian readiness to implement the UN Security Council resolution adopted on Monday, which supports a ceasefire proposal in Gaza. Mansour emphasized: "We want the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and a permanent end to the fighting." He described the Council's decision as "a step in the right direction" and pointed out that "the implementation of the resolution and the ceasefire rests on Israel."
On Monday, the UN Security Council adopted a U.S.-sponsored resolution supporting the ceasefire proposal in Gaza. The text, which "welcomes" the ceasefire proposal announced by U.S. President Joe Biden on May 31, calls on Israel and Hamas "to fully implement its terms without delay and unconditionally." It received 14 votes in favor, while Russia abstained.
In a statement published by the Palestinian news agency, Abbas stated that the Palestinian presidency considers "the adoption of this resolution a step in the right direction to stop the ongoing genocide against our people in the Gaza Strip."
Hamas quickly welcomed the adoption of the proposal on Monday, stating in a statement that "we are ready to cooperate with mediators regarding the implementation of the ceasefire proposal's principles."
After the vote, Israeli Ambassador Merav Ben-Nominated reiterated that "the war will stop" when Israel's objectives, including the release of hostages and the "destruction" of Hamas, are achieved. She noted that Hamas's refusal to release hostages through diplomacy proved that efforts to bring our hostages home must also take place through military means.
