French club Paris Saint-Germain has joined the race to sign Argentine forward Julián Alvarez from Manchester City during the upcoming summer transfer window. The Parisian club aims to strengthen its attack this summer, particularly following the departure of its all-time top scorer Kylian Mbappé at the end of the current season to Spanish club Real Madrid in a free transfer, after a seven-year stint.
Spanish newspaper "AS" reported that several top clubs in European leagues are looking to acquire Alvarez in the summer market, including Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, which has shown interest in securing the services of the Argentine player. The paper added that the French league champion is one of many clubs interested in signing the 24-year-old Alvarez, who may leave Manchester City this summer.
It was noted that the English club is keen on retaining the Argentine forward, who is under contract until 2028, with Manchester City officials expected to hold a meeting with Alvarez to determine his future in the coming days. The Champions League, twice English Premier League champion, and World Cup winner with Argentina, Alvarez may be seeking a new challenge in the summer, with Paris Saint-Germain considered one of the prominent clubs capable of paying the estimated transfer fee of €90 million.
The newspaper clarified that Mbappé's departure is expected to save the Ligue 1 champion around £200 million, allowing them to replace him with a strong signing from European football stars. Alvarez had an impressive season with Manchester City in various competitions recently, contributing to 32 goals last season (scoring 19 goals and providing 13 assists) across 54 matches, totaling 3,479 minutes of play. The Argentine star ranked third among the top scorers for the Premier League champion this season, behind Phil Foden who came second with 27 goals across all competitions, and Norwegian star Erling Haaland who topped the chart with 38 goals.
