A source in the Turkish Foreign Ministry indicated that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi discussed the Ukraine issue with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan during talks in Ankara and met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan today, Wednesday, in Wang's first foreign visit since his appointment. China appointed the veteran diplomat Wang as the new foreign minister on Tuesday, following the dismissal of his predecessor Qin Gang after a month of absence from his duties, despite only six months in office. The source stated that the discussions between Wang and Fidan included the latest developments in Ukraine and the global financial system. Erdoğan's office released a statement following the meeting, stating that Erdoğan expressed hope for increasing cooperation between Turkey and China, as both countries play important roles in global and regional issues. The Turkish Foreign Ministry source mentioned that Fidan and Wang discussed the development of economic and trade relations between Turkey and China. Furthermore, their discussions included "coordination of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Middle Corridor Initiative," in addition to nuclear energy, agriculture, and civil aviation. The ministers also discussed the situation of the mostly Muslim Uyghur minority living in the Xinjiang region of western China.
