Russia Launches Waves of Strikes with Missiles and Drones on Ukraine

The Air Force in Kyiv indicated today, Sunday, that "Russia launched several waves of strikes on Ukraine overnight, using 70 air attack weapons including cruise missiles, hypersonic missiles, and Iranian-made drones." It added via Telegram that "Ukrainian air defense destroyed 30 out of 40 cruise missiles and all 27 Shahed drones launched by Russia overnight." It stated, "In total, across several waves of attacks from the evening of August 5 to the morning of August 6, 2023, the enemy used 70 means of air attack," and mentioned that "Russia launched three Kinzhal hypersonic missiles without providing further details on them." It remains unclear whether there was any damage from the nighttime attack or what happened to the ten cruise missiles that were not intercepted.

Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yuri Ihnat told the public broadcasting authority that "one of the main targets of the Russian attack was the Khmelnytskyi region." Serhiy Tiurin, deputy governor of the Khmelnytskyi region in western Ukraine, stated that "a military airport in Starokostiantyniv was among the targets." He added on Telegram: "The Starokostiantyniv airport is in the enemy's sights. A series of explosions occurred in the Starokostiantyniv and Khmelnytskyi areas. Most of the missiles were intercepted by air defense." He indicated that "the explosions caused damage to several private homes, a cultural institution, and a bus station, and a grain silo caught fire."

Meanwhile, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin announced that "air defenses destroyed an enemy drone as it approached the Russian capital today, Sunday." Sobyanin wrote on the messaging app Telegram: "The drone approached Moscow around 11 AM (08:00 GMT)." The Russian Ministry of Defense separately stated that "the Ukrainian drone was shot down over Podolsk in the Moscow region, south of the capital."

Russian media reported that Sergey Aksyonov, the Moscow-appointed governor of Crimea, stated that the Chonhar Bridge leading to the peninsula was damaged due to a Ukrainian missile attack today, Sunday. Acting Governor of the Kherson Region, Vladimir Saldo, who was also appointed by Moscow, indicated that the bridge was struck using a Storm Shadow missile, which is produced in partnership between Britain and France. Saldo added that another small bridge over the Tonky Strait connecting the town of Henichesk with Arabat Spit on the northeastern coast of Crimea was also attacked, resulting in injuries to a civilian driver. He noted that a gas pipeline alongside the bridge serving Henichesk, the temporary administrative center of the Russian-controlled part of Kherson Region, was also damaged, leading to a gas service disruption for over 20,000 people. Russia accused Ukraine of launching two drone attacks on the capital Moscow last week, one of which caused damage to a skyscraper in the Moscow City business district.
