Who is Amouta, the Architect of Jordan's Glory in the Asian Cup?

Who is Amouta, the Architect of Jordan's Glory in the Asian Cup?

Moroccan coach Hussein Amouta has created a balanced artistic framework with an attacking boldness, leading the Jordanian national football team to reach the Asian Cup final for the first time in its history. During the ongoing continental championship in Qatar, Jordan, under Amouta's leadership, delivered an impressive performance. The "Nashama," as they are known, reached what can be considered "tactical and technical perfection" in football, defeating South Korea 2-0 in today's semifinal match.

Amouta joined the Jordanian team after a short coaching stint with the Royal Moroccan Army, where he led the team in its last matches of the previous season. His journey with Jordan represents his first real experience with a senior national team after nearly 17 years of coaching clubs and youth national teams.

### Who is Amouta?

Hussein Amouta was born on October 24, 1969, in Khemisset, Morocco. He is a former Moroccan football player who played as a midfielder. He began his playing career with Ittihad Khemisset in his hometown in 1988, later joining the prestigious Fath Union Sport where he spent six years. In 1997, he moved to Al Sadd, winning the league, Amir Cup, and Crown Prince Cup, finishing as the league's top scorer that season.

Amouta spent time in the UAE with Al Sharjah and in Saudi Arabia with Al Riyadh before returning to Qatar.

### Amouta with the Moroccan National Team

Amouta represented the Moroccan U-23 team in the football tournament at the 1992 Summer Olympics, playing in the second match against Sweden. He made his first appearance with the senior Moroccan team on September 2, 1990, during the qualifiers for the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations, where Morocco won against Mauritania 4-0.

### Unique Experience on the Field

Amouta is one of the few coaches who has managed teams while also playing in matches. This occurred during his early coaching days with his hometown club. He led this modest club (Ittihad Khemisset) to exceptional performances, culminating in a second-place finish in the Moroccan league in the 2007/2008 season, which qualified the club for the African Champions League for the first time in its history.

However, after three successful seasons, he left Ittihad Khemisset, and the club’s performance deteriorated significantly, leading to relegation to the third division.

### Amouta's Coaching Journey Begins

Following his time with Ittihad Khemisset, Amouta managed Fath Rabat during the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 seasons, winning the Moroccan Throne Cup and the African Confederation Cup. In 2011, he was appointed as the sporting director of Al Sadd, later taking over as head coach in 2012, where he coached a distinguished group of players, including Xavi Hernandez, current coach of Barcelona.

In January 2017, Amouta signed with Wydad Casablanca for a season and a half, winning the Moroccan league and the African Champions League. In December 2019, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation contracted him as the coach of the local national team, achieving the African Nations Championship title in 2020 in Cameroon and reaching the quarter-finals of the 2021 Arab Cup in Qatar.

On August 18, 2022, Amouta was appointed the new coach of Wydad, succeeding Walid Rekraki, but his coaching period ended in early December of the same year.

From May to June 2023, he supervised the Royal Moroccan Army in the last five remaining matches of the local league, winning the Moroccan league title.

### Jordan National Team

On June 27, 2023, Amouta was appointed coach of the Jordanian national football team, with which he is currently achieving impressive results in the Asian Cup.
