U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that the United States conveyed a message to Iran and Israel stating that the conflict in the Middle East should not escalate. Blinken mentioned on Wednesday that officials are in constant contact with allies and partners in the region, and there is "clear consensus" that no one should escalate the situation. He continued, saying, "We have engaged in intensive diplomacy with allies and partners, and we conveyed this message directly to Iran. We conveyed this message directly to Israel."
He added that the United States will continue to defend Israel against attacks but noted the importance of everyone in the region recognizing the risks of escalation and miscalculation. He further stated, "Launching more attacks will only increase the risk of serious outcomes that no one can predict and that no one can fully control."
Blinken, following a meeting that included Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and their Australian counterparts, indicated that talks aimed at reaching a ceasefire and the release of hostages in the Gaza conflict have reached their final stage and should conclude very soon.
