Did Turkey Send a "Hitman" to the Olympics?

Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikeç has become a topic of discussion on social media, especially after his image wearing what seems like a regular shirt with his hand in his pocket went viral at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The 51-year-old shooter appeared quite different from many of his competitors who sported large earmuffs, glasses, and specially designed outfits. In contrast, Yusuf was calm, donning ordinary glasses and nearly invisible earplugs.

At the Olympics in France, Yusuf Dikeç won a silver medal while keeping his hand in his pocket and without using shooting goggles, defeating his Serbian competitor. It’s noteworthy that Yusuf is a retired officer from the Turkish gendarmerie, aged 51. Last Tuesday, he clinched the silver medal in the mixed air pistol team competition, and since then, his pictures have flooded social media.

The informal vibe surrounding his appearance at this major sporting event in 2024 led many to humorously wonder if Turkey had sent a hitman to the Olympics. Some praised his performance and confidence, calling him "special," while others referred to him as "crazy."

Many compared Dikeç to South Korean shooter Kim Yeji, whose skill and calm demeanor also caused quite a stir earlier this week, along with the advanced technical gear she brought to the matches. Social media posts suggested that the two embody the contrast between "Google Sheets" and "Microsoft Excel," referencing men versus women packing for a trip.
