Significant Progress in Swiss Talks Aimed at Ending Lebanese War: Key Points Unveiled

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi announced that Pakistani and Qatari mediation has achieved significant progress towards ending the war in Lebanon.

Araqchi emphasized, "The true test remains in the success of the de-escalation cell in Lebanon."

According to Araqchi's post on 'X', talks with the United States marked "significant progress," revealing that "oil and petrochemical exports were exempted from sanctions, the blockade was lifted, some frozen assets were released, and a major plan to rebuild Iran was launched."

The Iranian foreign ministry stated earlier on Monday that "good progress has been made in Swiss talks concerning the implementation of the other party's commitments."

The ministry added: "The negotiating team's work has concluded, but technical teams will continue their duties."

It noted that an agreement was reached on a mechanism for the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

The talks also laid the foundation for starting negotiations on the final agreement.

Qatar and Pakistan issued a joint statement on Monday regarding the conclusion of the U.S.-Iranian talks in Switzerland.

The first round of high-level talks, part of a memorandum of understanding signed in Islamabad, included representatives from Iran, the U.S., and mediating countries Qatar and Pakistan, held in the Swiss resort of Burgenstock.

The Qatari foreign ministry's statement revealed: "The first day of the Lake Lucerne summit was marked by positive and constructive atmospheres, achieving encouraging progress, including the establishment of a mechanism for continuing technical talks."

The statement added: "Based on the memorandum of understanding, the parties agreed to create a high-level committee to oversee political mediation efforts. Chief negotiators will provide periodic reports to the committee, alongside leading specialized working groups on the nuclear file, sanctions, and establishing a follow-up and dispute resolution group, ensuring effective implementation of the memorandum and addressing other related issues."

It continued: "The high-level committee agreed on a roadmap to reach a final agreement within 60 days, laying the groundwork for an immediate new round of technical talks. A communication channel was established between parties for the period specified in the memorandum's fifth paragraph, to prevent incidents and misunderstandings, ensuring safe passage for commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz."

The statement highlighted that both sides agreed to "establish a de-escalation working group, including both parties and the Lebanese Republic, facilitated by mediators to ensure compliance with the cessation of military operations in Lebanon, as outlined in the memorandum of understanding."

It confirmed that technical talks are scheduled to continue throughout the week at the Burgenstock resort, addressing all relevant issues. The mediating parties will strive to ensure negotiations continue constructively towards a final agreement.

The statement expressed gratitude from Qatar and Pakistan "to the U.S. and Iran for their continuous commitment to diplomatic solutions and their efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict."

The mediating parties also acknowledged "sister and friendly nations for their continuous support and valuable contributions to the ongoing negotiations."
