American and Israeli officials have stated that U.S. President Donald Trump called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last Thursday, urging him to begin withdrawing Israeli forces from Syria. Trump also encouraged Netanyahu to take similar actions in Lebanon.
An American official told Axios that Trump informed Netanyahu that the Israeli military presence in Syrian territories creates tensions and could lead to escalation, noting that the same holds for Lebanon.
The call followed a meeting between Trump and Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Turkey.
According to the site, Trump's requests come as Netanyahu faces increasing political pressure ahead of crucial elections for his political survival. It is unlikely that he will undertake a widespread withdrawal from regions occupied by Israel in Syria or take additional steps in Lebanon beyond what was previously agreed.
