On his inaugural visit to Athens, Lebanese President Jozef Aoun emphasized the importance of negotiating with Israel and stabilizing Lebanon, affirming to his Greek counterpart Konstantinos Tasoulas that the Lebanese people are weary of wars. Aoun stated the negotiations aim to conclude hostilities, while Greece underscored its support for an independent Lebanon, the implementation of Resolution 1701, and strengthened ties with the European Union.
During their meeting, Aoun reiterated, "Lebanon and its citizens are tired from wars," stressing that "the negotiation objective with Israel is to end hostilities." He added, "We have reached, with U.S. support, a framework agreement that must be implemented fully by both parties, without selectivity."
Aoun highlighted that "Lebanon’s stability is crucial for the region and Europe," warning that "instability in Lebanon would adversely impact the region."
Aoun expressed gratitude to Tasoulas for Greece's "continuous and unwavering support," recognizing Greece as a steadfast ally of Lebanon. Greek President Tasoulas acknowledged that the Lebanon-Israel talks promote Lebanese independence and prosperity and facilitate the application of Resolution 1701.
Tasoulas emphasized his country's support for "an independent Lebanon," committing to strengthening relations between Lebanon and the EU. He noted the robust ties between the nations, affirming that "Lebanon is a friend of Greece, and our historic connection binds us," assuring Aoun of Greece’s support in his leadership tasks.
Aoun arrived at Athens International Airport at 10:30 am, welcomed by Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, Greek Ambassador to Lebanon Despina Koukoulopoulou, Lebanese Ambassador to Greece King Hajjal, and other embassy officials. Following a brief airport pause, Aoun proceeded to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma Square, laying a wreath in honor of fallen soldiers.
Following the Lebanese and Greek national anthems, Aoun and the Greek Foreign Minister reviewed the honor guard, after which Aoun greeted the attending Greek and Lebanese dignitaries before heading to the presidential palace for formal discussions with his Greek counterpart.
