Shabab Belouizdad had qualified for the group stage after defeating Kenyan club Gor Mahia 8-1 on aggregate in the second preliminary round. Meanwhile, Mazembe qualified at the expense of Gabon's "Bonguidi," winning 2-1 in the first leg and repeating the result in the second leg. This match is the first encounter in Group B, which also includes South Africa’s Sundowns and Sudan’s Al-Hilal, making it a highly competitive group shared between two Arab teams and two African teams.
