The White House: Social Media Demonstrates Uncontrollable Power

The White House stated that social media has proven to have a power that cannot be controlled. The White House believes that social media requires reforms and stronger regulatory measures than existing internal laws. Users of Facebook around the world reported being unable to access its suite of social media applications, including the main network, Instagram, and the messaging service WhatsApp.

The disruption that occurred today, Monday, affected the company's services globally, as well as those of Amazon and Google. More than 125,000 users on Facebook reported issues accessing the app at 11:54 AM in New York, according to the Down Detector website, while at least 98,000 people reported problems with Instagram, and around 35,000 people indicated issues with WhatsApp.

Facebook's suite of applications averages more than 2.7 billion daily users. The Down Detector highlighted service outages for the three social networks (all owned by Facebook) in densely populated areas including Washington, Paris, and Dubai. The New York Times reported that Facebook ruled out a cyberattack as the reason behind the interruption of its services with WhatsApp and Instagram.
