Dr. Hani Aref, a neurology professor at Ain Shams University, has revealed surprising insights regarding the use of aspirin, stating that its application in dissolving blood clots is a misconception. Aref pointed out that the injections used to dissolve clots are administered in hospitals, and there are currently 80 units treating clots, with efforts underway to increase the number of units addressing strokes, including university hospitals.
He emphasized that recurring strokes leave a greater impact on individuals; therefore, they must be treated as quickly as possible to avoid lasting effects. He noted that the brain is adaptable and can heal itself initially, but if the duration of the clot is prolonged without treatment, it begins to leave a lasting mark on the person.
Furthermore, the professor mentioned that following good health systems is an essential preventive method to reduce the incidence of strokes. He indicated that recent discoveries show that prolonged isolation affects the immune system, explaining that employees who retire often experience an increase in illnesses due to long-term isolation.
He elaborated that some clots originate from the heart and may be discovered by chance, noting that the likelihood of experiencing a clot increases with age. He specified that the COVID-19 virus leads to blood clotting, which can develop into cerebral clotting, highlighting that the incidence of strokes has risen since the emergence of the virus.
Lastly, Aref pointed out that there has been a misuse of anticoagulant medications amid the spread of COVID-19, as individuals take these medications as a precautionary measure, which puts many at risk.
