Saudi Foreign Minister: Crisis with Lebanon Rooted in Hezbollah's Dominance

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud said on Saturday that the latest crisis with Lebanon stems from the Lebanese political composition that reinforces the dominance of the armed group Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran, and contributes to ongoing instability. He added, "We have no opinion on whether the Lebanese government stays or goes."

Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Arab countries expelled Lebanese envoys amid a diplomatic dispute that threatens to exacerbate Lebanon's economic crisis following criticism from Lebanese Information Minister George Kordahi regarding the Saudi-led military intervention in Yemen. Prince Faisal stated in a phone interview with Reuters, "I think the issue is much broader than the current situation... I believe it is important for the government in Lebanon or the Lebanese institution to formulate a path forward that frees Lebanon from the current political structure that bolsters Hezbollah's dominance."
