Dozens were killed in a massive explosion in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, early Saturday morning, according to medical sources. The director of the central government mortuary in the city, Sene Kamara, stated that the mortuary received 91 bodies after the explosion of a fuel tanker. Local sources revealed that large crowds of residents had gathered to collect leaking fuel from the tanker in the Wellington area when a bus collided with it, leading to the massive explosion. President Julius Maada Bio, who was in Scotland attending UN climate talks, expressed his sorrow over "heavy loss of life." He wrote on Twitter: "I deeply sympathize with the families who lost loved ones and those who were disfigured as a result." A member of the Red Cross noted that relief operations were still ongoing Saturday morning, which may indicate an increase in the death toll.
