Earthquake Strikes East Coast of Japan with Magnitude 7.1

The Japan Meteorological Agency announced that an earthquake with an initial magnitude of 7.1 occurred off the east coast of Japan.

The Japan Broadcasting Corporation reported that the earthquake struck at 11:08 PM local time (14:08 GMT) and shook buildings in the capital, Tokyo. The epicenter was located offshore in the Fukushima region at a depth of 60 kilometers. The earthquake caused power outages for 950,000 homes in Tokyo and eight prefectures, with preliminary reports of four injuries. It is noteworthy that no tsunami warning was issued.

Japan is situated on the "Ring of Fire" in the Pacific Ocean, where many earthquakes and volcanic activities are recorded. The city experienced a powerful earthquake of magnitude 9.0 on March 11, 2011, which affected large areas, most notably the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. That earthquake generated tsunami waves reaching 10 meters along the northern and eastern coasts of the country, resulting in nearly 20,000 deaths and missing persons, alongside a devastating environmental disaster due to a nuclear reactor explosion in the Fukushima area.
