A Heartbreaking Image: A Syrian Refugee Cries While Saying Goodbye to Her Danish Neighbor

Since last year, Denmark, which hosts over 40,000 Syrian refugees, has begun reviewing their cases for potential deportation. Periodically, activists and human rights defenders have denounced the actions of Danish authorities, especially as recent UN reports confirmed that those returning to Syria face various forms of harassment, persecution by security forces, and even imprisonment.

"My heart is with you…"

The latest addition to these protests is a single image of a Syrian woman shared by several activists on social media recently, showing her tearfully bidding farewell to her Danish neighbor, who reached out to her from her window, as if saying, "My heart is with you… Forgive us."

Although the case of Asmaa Al-Natour and her husband facing deportation from Denmark has been ongoing for several months, the photo has resurfaced and gained traction in the past few hours.

"They bombed my dream…"

Asmaa had previously stated in interviews that the Danish immigration authorities "bombed my dream, just as the Syrian regime bombed our homes, but this time the destruction is psychological."

The woman in her fifties lived in the town of Ringsted, 30 miles southwest of Copenhagen, with her husband. However, in February, authorities notified them that they would not renew their residency, allowing only their sons, aged 20 and 22, to stay and granting them asylum.

It is noteworthy that around 44,000 Syrians live in Denmark, but the relevant authorities began a large-scale review of their cases at the end of June 2020.
