Minutes after the press conference held by Sudanese army leader, General Abdel Fattah Burhan, on Tuesday, in which he stated that Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok would be released that day, Hamdok's office issued a statement criticizing Burhan's remarks. Burhan stated in the press conference that "Hamdok is in my house," indicating that he is in good health and would return home today. He added that Hamdok was unable to work freely because he was politically constrained. Burhan emphasized that the Sudanese army aims to restore the shine of the popular revolution after the Forces of Freedom and Change rejected all proposals for a solution, forcing the army to take urgent measures.
However, Hamdok's media office rejected Burhan's comments. Hamdok's office stated: "The coup leaders must immediately release the Prime Minister and all those with him, and they must know that the Prime Minister is protected by his people who led a long-term peaceful revolution without shedding a drop of blood."
The statement added: "The claims of the coup's head that what he is doing is protecting the revolution and its Prime Minister will not fool the Sudanese people or the world, as everyone knows that the coalition currently forming to undermine the country and the Sudanese revolution is a coalition with the army in appearance, and various militias in the background, along with limited-capacity political leaders."
It continued: "We trust that the Sudanese people will not be swayed by attempts to obscure and sweet words about correcting the revolution, as the Sudanese revolution belongs to the people." The statement concluded, "The Sudanese people, the region, and the world will not accept the return of the Islamist regime again under any guise, and Prime Minister Dr. Abdullah Hamdok is the executive leader recognized by the Sudanese people and the world."
Earlier, on Monday, General Abdel Fattah Burhan dissolved the Sovereignty Council, which included both civilian and military members, announced the dissolution of the Council of Ministers, and imposed a state of emergency in the country. Burhan affirmed that these steps are necessary to correct the course of the revolution in the country, after conditions reached a dangerous level threatening Sudan.
