Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær spoke for the first time after the "Red Devils" relieved him of his duties, revealing his wish for the club. In an interview with the Manchester United website, Solskjær said, "I had the honor of managing the club, and I hoped to leave it in a better position than when I took over." He added, "The club's fans are amazing, and I have great friends at United. I hope we meet again under better circumstances," as reported by British news network Sky News.
The "Red Devils" sacked Solskjær due to poor results, one day after the team suffered a 4-1 defeat against newly promoted Watford, which saw them drop to seventh place in the Premier League. Solskjær had extended his contract with United for three years until 2024 last July, but was dismissed after the team lost five of their last seven matches in the league.
United stated in a release, "Manchester United announces that Ole Gunnar Solskjær has left his position as manager of the club. Ole will remain a legend for Manchester United, and we regret having to make this difficult decision." The English club’s statement mentioned, "While results in the past few weeks have been disappointing, we should not overlook the work Solskjær has done over the past three years to lay the foundations for long-term success," according to Reuters.
Former player Michael Carrick, a part of Solskjær's coaching staff, will take charge of the team for their next match in the Champions League away against Villarreal next Tuesday, while the club stated they would appoint an interim manager to lead the team until the end of the current season. United has not won the Premier League title since 2013, the last season for former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who led the team to win the title 13 times.
