Amazon Rainforest: The Crisis Escalates Due to Humans

An annual report from the Brazilian government has revealed that deforestation in the Amazon rainforest has surged by 22% over the year, reaching its highest level since 2006, thereby contradicting President Jair Bolsonaro's claims that authorities are curbing this illegal practice. The Brazilian Space Research Agency recorded a loss of 13,235 square kilometers of the world's largest rainforest in data collected via satellites, which is nearly 17 times the area of New York City. The official data covers the period from August 2020 to July 2021. This increase occurs despite Bolsonaro's efforts to demonstrate that his government is serious about preserving the Amazon rainforest, which is considered essential in the fight against climate change. However, Bolsonaro, who is affiliated with the far-right, continues to advocate for increased mining and agriculture for commercial purposes in protected areas of the Amazon. During the UN Climate Summit in Glasgow (COP26), the Brazilian government postponed its commitment to end deforestation by two years to 2028, a goal that will require a significant annual reduction in this illegal practice.
