A new study has shown that not getting enough sleep can lead to various problems in areas of the brain that control language, planning, time perception, and memory. Experts at the luxury British mattress brand TEMPUR recently conducted a study on the relationship between lack of sleep and memory and found that more than half (54%) of the respondents believe that insufficient sleep worsens their memory, and science supports this finding.
In explaining the link between sleep and memory, the experts at TEMPUR said, "The most significant outcome of not sleeping well is a decreased ability to focus and learn, making it harder to absorb new information and remember it." Good sleep at night creates and maintains memories according to their importance. This is because the brain's repetition of recent events occurs only when you are asleep. During sleep, your mind transfers memories to a more efficient storage area, meaning that when you wake up, memory tasks can be performed faster and more accurately.
The UK's National Health Service reported that one in three people experiences sleep problems, which means that the memory of millions could be affected. TEMPUR indicated that the link relates to how the brain develops, as the brain consists of 100 billion neurons connected by thousands of links that are constantly evolving. If you do not get enough sleep, you do not allow your brain to strengthen certain connections, which in turn does not provide the time needed to solidify your memories.
The study revealed that four out of five people believe having the right mattress is essential for a restful night's sleep. Creating a comfortable sleep environment is important for achieving good sleep, and choosing the most suitable mattress is vital for that, according to the British newspaper Mirror.
