On Tuesday, U.S. President Joe Biden ordered American flags at the White House and military bases to be flown at half-mast until Saturday, in mourning for the victims of the shooting attack in Highland Park, Illinois. Following the shooting during the Independence Day parade in the suburbs of Chicago that resulted in the deaths of 6 individuals and injuries to around 30, Biden stated that "the nation must unite in mourning for the loss of life during the celebration of America’s birthday." In his statement, he added: "As a sign of respect for the victims of the senseless violence of gun use... I hereby order the flag of the United States to be flown at half-mast." This order for half-masting the American flag applies to the White House, all federal buildings, military bases, and embassies and consulates abroad, and will remain in effect until next Saturday.
