Closure of the Central Bank of Lebanon: Employees Announce a 3-Day Strike

The Syndicate of Employees of the Central Bank of Lebanon issued the following statement: During the entry of a group from the State Security apparatus into the premises of the Central Bank of Lebanon, Judge Ghada Aoun and her companions entered the bank's premises in an unusual manner, disregarding the established legal procedures, which undermined the dignity of the Central Bank and its employees.

In light of its previous warning strike and its statements demanding the protection of the Central Bank and its employees, especially since it is the only institution in Lebanon operating at full capacity despite the challenging circumstances.

After there was no response to its demands, questions arise about the intentions of some to close this institution and disrupt its operations. Given all the aforementioned actions that have been exercised, which constitute an injustice and slander against the institution and its employees, the Union Council unanimously decided to announce a complete strike and closure for a period of 3 days starting from Wednesday, July 20, 2022, to allow for rational intervention to protect the institution.

We reiterate that we operate under the law, and we call on all stakeholders, particularly the Minister of Justice, the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, and the General Prosecutor, to intervene to put an end to these inappropriate actions by Judge Ghada Aoun, which deviate from all legal norms in an unprecedented manner, so that we do not have to, regretfully, declare an indefinite strike.
